What Is GERD?

If the acids produced in the stomach are moving back frequently into the esophagus, you will suffer from GERD or chronic acid reflux disease. Frequent Gastroesophageal disease irritates the esophagus lining. The mild acid reflux is observed in many people at least twice a week.

Symptoms of chronic acid reflux

Causes of Gastroesophageal disease

Some of the causes of GERD include weak LES due to the intake of certain foods and medicines, stress, smoking, intake of aspirin, chocolate, coffee, hiatal hernia, intake of meal late night, intake of a large meal, and fried or fatty foods. You are likely to suffer from increased incidence of chronic acid reflux due to delayed emptying of the stomach, pregnancy, obesity, bulging at the top of your stomach, scleroderma and pregnancy.

If chronic acid reflux disease is not cured in time, you are likely to suffer from the esophageal ulcer, esophageal stricture, and Barret’s esophagus.

Acid Reflux in Infants

Signs of acid reflux in infants include discomfort, irritability, coughing, poor feeding, and arching the back. Children are likely to suffer from breathing problems, refuse to eat and reduced weight gain.

Burping is recommended during feeding to prevent acid reflux in children. You can add one table teaspoon full of the rice cereal to two ounces of the infant milk. You need to keep the baby upright for at least 30 minutes after feeding. You need to feed small meals to the infants to get rid of acid reflux.

Hints for Adults to Get Rid of chronic acid reflux

Adults suffering from GERD are advised to prevent intake of cheese, milk, meat, a higher quantity of salt, high fat foods and oily foods, and foods rich in fatty acids. It is also suggested an intake of coffee, orange juice, carbonated beverages, mint, chocolate, and tomato sauce.

Foods that Helps to Reduce Chronic Acid Reflux Symptoms

You need to include foods rich in protein and low in cholesterol like lentils, almonds, cashews, salmon, and tuna to get rid of the symptoms of GERD. Foods rich in vitamin C such as potatoes are ideal for people suffering from chronic acid reflux.

You can also include fruits including citrus fruits, peaches, melons, apples, and berries to reduce the symptoms of chronic acid reflux. You can also include eggs in your daily diet. You are advised to practice mild exercises daily.

You should avoid intake of food two hours before going to the bed. You should not sleep immediately after intake of food in the afternoon.

Gaviscon is one of the best antacids to neutralize the stomach acids and cure chronic acid reflux. Zantac, which is one of the H2 receptor blockers, helps to reduce production of stomach acids.
